Ebola virus disease outbreaks and HIV control

Central and western African countries have the highest risk of Ebola virus disease outbreaks and, concomitantly, the slowest progress in the reduction of new cases of HIV/AIDS.1,2 Ebola virus disease outbreaks profoundly disrupt health-care systems. For HIV, Ebola virus disease outbreaks exacerbate systemic shortages of testing kits and antiretroviral drugs and the chronic deficit of health-care workers, leading to undertesting of at-risk populations and reduced care-seeking behaviour due to social and political stigma towards vulnerable populations.

Advancing a fixed-dose combination for children with HIV

Antiretrovirals and other therapeutic drugs for adults are often licensed for a decade before they are approved in children.1 Compounding this gap in drug availability for children with HIV is the lack of fixed-dose combinations (of licensed therapies) that are appropriate for use in weight bands for children across the ages, with only one distinct fixed-dose combination available for children weighing at least 3 kg and greater than 1 month of age.2 Published in The Lancet HIV, the UNIVERSAL1 study evaluated safety and pharmacokinetics of a fixed dose per weight band of emtricitabine–tenofovir alafenamide with dolutegravir in children.

Differentiated service delivery and self-care in HIV

Since 2025, shifts in the global HIV landscape, including changing international financing, expanding integration, increasing emphasis on country ownership, and rapid growth in digital health technologies, require a fundamental reconsideration of how HIV services should be delivered and sustained.1 Health systems are increasingly being forced to determine what must be protected, what can be simplified, and where responsibility for care should lie. In this context, differentiated service delivery (DSD) and self-care are frequently discussed in parallel, yet their relationship remains insufficiently defined within HIV policy and implementation.
